James "Jake" S. Gilbreath was raised in Texas, but graduated from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Magna Cum Lade with a B.A. in 2005. In 2006, Jake returned to Texas where he attended University of Texas School of Law from 2006-2009. 

In law school, Jake developed his courtroom skills representing victims of family violence in family law matters as a student attorney at the University of Texas Domestic Violence Clinic. Jake also clerked with Gardere, Wynne, Sewell, LLP, and Baron & Budd, P.C. in addition to working at Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid. Jake graduated with a J.D. from UT Law in 2009 and passed the Texas bar and was licensed to practice law in November 2009.  Jake joined Piper & Turner, PLLC in 2009.

Since joining Piper & Turner, PLLC in 2009, Jake has focused his practice exclusively on complex family law matters.  Jake routinely serves as second chair to Jim or Travis in handling contested matters in both trial and hearings.  In addition, Jake has handled his on his own complex and contentious matters in the courtroom earning him the reputation of being a young and innovative trial lawyer. 

In addition to his work at Piper & Turner, PLLC and in the community, Jake has dedicated much of his time handling complex pro bono cases for the lower income families.  In addition to regularly volunteering at Volunteer Legal Services clinics, Jake maintains a constant clientele of pro bono clients struggling with the legal system.  Because of his work, Jake has been accepted to the State Bar of Texas Pro Bono College, received the Judge Suzanne Covington Pro Bono Award, and has been featured by the UT Law - National Pro Bono Week Recognition

Jake and the staff at Piper & Turner, PLLC practice a client-focused approach to litigation.  Jake has been trained by board-certified attorneys James W. Piper and Travis L. Turner that contentious and complex family law litigation is often an extraordinarily difficult time for clients and their families.  Jake has been trained to handle the most difficult cases in family law while maintaining constant communication and aid to clients in need.   Jake’s training, knowledge and courtroom experience helps our clients weather the storm.
